Recently, I’ve been interested in is the combination of Augmented Reality and GPS. I wanted to explore a wide range of use cases in which augmented reality could be useful for tourism and navigation. In my research, I came across a few apps that do an exceptional job of doing just that. There weren’t a lot of apps in this category but here’s a list I came up with for the Best AR apps for navigation and tourism.
1.HoloMaps- Visualize the World like Never Before
Holomaps is the first app of its kind for navigating a 3D virtual map while overlaying real-time data in a solo or shared experience. The store edition integrates Bing 3D to delivery over 200 cities and landmarks as a 3D model of any size giving you a “Godzilla” view.
2. HudWay- Heads up Display for Driving
HudWay is a unique application for smartphone users that allows drivers to focus on the road, keep their hands on the wheel and mind on driving. Just put the phone on the dashboard and does not require any projectors, it works fine without special film on windshield. Hudway is loaded with features and is quite easy to use, I definitely recommend checking it out for IOS or Andriod.
3. ViewRanger- Trails and Maps
ViewRanger brings augmented reality to the countryside with thousands of inspiring trail guides to navigate your outdoor adventures. You can share your adventures and inspire others to discover new places. Its Perfect for exploring mountain peaks or simply days out in the countryside. What I found cool is that ViewRanger is used by more than 250 search and rescue teams.
4. AR Glass for Wikipedia
I don’t know if anyone is still using Google Glass, but I always thought this was a cool application for AR. Using the GPS, the app retrieves online data about your surroundings from Wikipedia and displays them in your sight. This is certainly a great app if you’re new to a city or just want to be an informed tourist.
5. Augmented Car GPS Navigator
What’s great about this app is you no longer need to buy a separate dash cam to improve your road safety or to buy a separate GPS navigation device to reach your destination. Use CamOnRoad application for both purposes: as the car blackbox and as the awesome video-navigation system. Moreover, speed cameras notifications are available in the app. No more fines from speedcams. Car DVR & GPS navigator is available only for Andriod, you can check it out here.
With HoloTour, you can Immerse yourself with a unique combination of 360-degree video, spatial sound, and holographic scenery that creates a very real sense of presence. Allowing you to effortlessly move around and explore the beauty and history of Rome or uncover the hidden secrets of Machu Picchu.
7. Google Earth VR
While this is not an app for augmented reality it’s still cool as hell. You can explore the world from totally new perspective. Stroll the streets of Tokyo, soar over Yosemite, or teleport across the globe. You can download Google Earth VR available on Steam for the HTC Vive.
